Podemos dizer então que o past perfect é formado por:
Had + verbo principal no particípio passado.
Por exemplo: I had done the job, que significa “Eu tinha feito o trabalho”.
“The film had already started when we got to the cinema”
Affirmative form: sujeito + passado simples do verbo to have (had) + particípio passado do verbo principal
Para frases interrogativas deve-se simplesmente trocar o had de lugar com o sujeito. Confira:
“Had she been here?” (Ela tinha estado aqui?)
“Had you already had dinner when I called to you?” (Você já tinha jantado quando eu liguei?)
“Had she read the book before seeing the movie?” (Ela tinha lido o livro antes de assistir ao filme?)
Interrogative form: had + sujeito + particípio passado do verbo principal
Para frases negativas, por sua vez, basta adicionar o not junto ao had: had not ou hadn’t. Confira:
“They hadn’t worked well yesterday”, que significa Eles não tinham trabalhado bem ontem.
“Peter hadn’t realized that the place was so dangerous” (Pedro não tinha se dado conta de que o lugar era tão perigoso).
“I hadn’t heard you knocking the door because I was sleeping” (Não ouvi você bater na porta porque eu estava dormindo).
Negative form: sujeito + had + not (hadn’t) + particípio passado do verbo principal.
